cinema history class: nightmare castle

Session: Italian Gothic Horror Month, Week 2
Movie: Nightmare Castle (1965)
AKA: Night of the Doomed
Directed by Mario Caiano

As always, there may be spoilers here. And the trailer may be NSFW and/or NSFL.

Plot:
Professor Arrowsmith walks this way to kill his faithless wife and her lover. Then marries his dead wife's crazy sister in order to inherit the family estate. But the dead wife (and her dead lover) won't let such injustice stand. Hilarity ensues.

Reaction:
Nightmare Castle is a mood piece. The opening grabs your attention. But after that, it slows down a bit and does a slow burn until the pace picks up again near the end. The subplot about the maid, kept alive through blood tranfusions is an interesting element. And it's one that reminds of the prior movie, Mill of the Stone Women, which had a similar subplot.

Barbara Steele does a great job in her dual role. You thought Patty Duke was great playing identical cousins? Steele is miles ahead of her playing identical stepsisters. Seriously, she did an amazing job conveying a mix of anger and insanity.

Ratings:
Me: 8.5
Christina: 9
Ethan: 8
